The Sparta Business Expo is set for March 3, 2012, but don’t be surprised at some of the changes that are taking place this year at the Expo. Organizers say the changes will be to benefit the businesses attending the expo, to heighten awareness of the benefits of shopping local and choosing Sparta over other options. The theme is “Shop Local, Build Community”. One example of choosing local is displayed on the promotion poster of purchasing an item in Sparta compared to a big box store on Alpine. When the fuel expense to drive to Alpine is included in the equation, a customer choosing Sparta will actually save $1.14 in addition to the traffic congestion and crowds that one would face out of the area.
Organizers are excited to educate the public on another reason why it is very important that we continue to choose local businesses. Every dollar spent in Sparta at local businesses revolve in the community through taxes, employee wages, school and non-profit programming support, local sports team sponsorship, and at other local businesses. Long term, these revolving dollars will lighten the financial burden on residents of the Sparta community. Whereas dollars spent outside of Sparta generally support school systems, water, sewer, and local road infrastructure, and police and fire rescue departments of other communities. “Choosing” to shop local is a conscious choice by consumers, which community are you “choosing” to build?
Bring the whole family to see updates on local projects from community organizations, take home coupons and samples from local businesses, and
learn how spending dollars at LOCAL businesses will return money directly to the community groups you are involved with every day (Sparta 4-H Club, Boy Scouts, American Cancer Society, etc.).
Local businesses pay taxes that provide funding for public schools, they support local community sports teams, and participate in local organization fundraisers like girl scouts and boy scouts, 4 –H clubs, and church youth groups. With the support of local businesses, the community can host events and festivals like Town & Country Days, Old Fashioned Christmas and even print the local Sparta TODAY newspaper with Sparta news. Without the local business sponsors, the newspaper would not be possible!
National retail chains may have sales that save you dimes and nickels on merchandise that is also offered in Sparta. However, the next time you make your purchase somewhere else, think about what those dimes could have brought to your community.
